Mikosa Magazine

By: Henxs.com, at 04-05-2009, 17:00

Mikosa Foundation was founded in Amsterdam in 2005. Based on our manifesto, we spread artists' works, being a the firment for a box of contemporary art. We want to show and melt different styles and visual images together, ranging works from graffiti writers to internet designer and from street to video artists.

For our first project, we started using a medium most of the artists got in common: their black book. This is usually filled up with first ideas and developments, unfinished artworks, rough sketches, drips and dirty scribbles. This idea has been our first long-term project, called the Mikosa Magazine, where every chosen artist is free to send us whatever by respecting this boundary. We love to see handmade stuff from people with different backgrounds.

Each Mikosa Magazine consists 10 artists and each artist gets four a4 pages, all done black on white. The magazine runs on a maximum of 500 pieces, but in fact we only print 250 of them. But not only the artist designs stays handmade, every other part oft he magazine should be done as much by hand as possible. Starting from the cutting and folding of the karton covers, through the usage of stamps to the individual painting of each copy and the final binding of them with a small rope.

Beside this handmade principle, the Mikosa Foundation tries to keep a handmade production and even the usage of ancient machines alive. As a constant factor of the magazine, the manufacturing of the karton cover is done by one of the oldest paper board companies in Europe, using their technics and machines from the early 20's of the last century. If possible, we always try to involve more production technics to our issues in form of gadgets, from handmade silkscreen prints till handmade buttons.

Each issue also comes with a special gadget that usually goes together with the magazine. As for Issue#01 we did the Mikosa Poster Collection, so every artist work is also available on an A1 poster. For Issue#02, the Mikosa Card Box was a handmade carton box with A5 off-set prints inside. As a part of Issue#03 we produced the Mikosa Fabric, a silkscreen print on an A3 cotton with one design of each participant and more smaller gadgets will follow with each new issue.

We welcome the Mikosa Magazine to Graffitishop.eu & Henxs.com
